Schuyler-Yates RSVP has a new sponsor. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schuyler County ended its 40-year sponsorship March 31st. After completing the grant process, Catholic Charities of Schuyler County was awarded the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program on April 1st.

Schuyler-Yates RSVP Director, Dick Evans, believes the new sponsor is a good match for the program.

“The mission of Catholic Charities-Schuyler is to ‘help build communities that care for all people by reducing poverty, promoting healthy individual and family life, collaborating with faith communities and advocating for justice and peace.’ The mission of RSVP is to ‘engage persons age 55 and older in volunteer service to meet critical community needs and to provide a high quality experience that will enrich the lives of volunteers.’” Evans sees these missions as an integral part of the community social safety net.

“The volunteer experience not only benefits the volunteer, it helps local non-profit agencies and organizations deliver essential programs and services.” Evans adds, “Over 300 RSVP volunteers support the work of food pantries, hospitals and nursing homes, schools, thrift shops and Habitat for Humanity projects in Schuyler and Yates Counties. RSVP volunteers help elementary school students improve their reading skills, support local public libraries, lead osteoporosis prevention exercise classes and assist in food distribution. In 2012, RSVP volunteers provided 33,000 hours of service to more than 40 non-profit groups.”

While the physical move has been completed, it may be May first before all systems are up and running at 100%. RSVP staff asks for your continued patience as they settle into their new home and finish unpacking.

For most volunteers, there won’t be any impact on their current volunteer assignments. That’s also the case for most volunteer stations.

An open house is being planned to give people an opportunity to learn more about the exciting volunteer opportunities available to RSVP participants. It’s also a chance to learn about the range of programs offered by Catholic Charities of Schuyler County. Schuyler-Yates RSVP is now located at the offices of Catholic Charities of Schuyler County, 607 N. Franklin Street in Watkins Glen. You may reach them at 607-535-2050, extension 204 or by email. The RSVP office is open Monday through Thursday, 8am to 4:30pm.
