ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Chemung County Poverty Reduction Coalition, in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chemung County, Economic Opportunity Program, Catholic Charities, and Tompkins Community Action, is hosting a Community Conference on Poverty on Monday, November 18th from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Ernie Davis Community Center at EOP, 350 E. 5th St, Elmira. The full day event will include various workshops, lunch, guest speakers, and a session devoted to drafting the Poverty Reduction Action Plan.

The event is the culmination of the Poverty Coalition’s monthly planning meetings. This is a great training opportunity for those who work with at-risk and low-income populations to learn more about the complexities of living on a limited income.
The morning session will include a Community Action Poverty Simulation, facilitated by Tompkins Community Action. During this eye-opening workshop, participants are assigned an identity and family and must survive one “month” on a limited income in 4, 15 minute weeks.

Lunch will then be catered by EOP’s Community Food for Jobs Program and feature local guest speakers who will share their personal experiences of poverty and success.

The afternoon will include an hour of breakout workshops, including information on Bridges Out of Poverty, the School Readiness Project, and the Community Health Improvement Plan.

Finally, the conference will conclude with a session to begin drafting the Poverty Reduction Action Plan.

A suggested donation of $10 is requested for the Poverty Simulation workshop, as is a $10 suggested donation for lunch.

Registration is online. Please call 734-4453 or visit Cornell’s website for more information.
