WATKINS GLEN — With sunshine and above-average temperatures enhancing its stunning scenery, Watkins Glen State Park was the place to be on Oct. 25. Mixed among the steady stream of hikers were several folks wearing brightly colored T-shirts, some purple and some green, that were doubly eye-catching because of the statistics scrawled on their backs:

“Up to 10 million children witness domestic violence each year.”
“75 percent of runaways are female.”
These messages were part of a first-time event, “Take A Hike, Domestic Violence!” in recognition of October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
