Please join us to learn a bit of history, hear about new programs & initiatives and meet the staff and volunteers that make it all possible. Refreshments will be available.
Catholic Charities was commissioned by Bishop Emeritas Matthew H. Clark in June 1980. Saints Peter and Paul Parish (now part of Blessed Sacrament Parish) provided our first offices in Saints Peter and Paul School across High Street from the church. In 1980, our services included emergency assistance (food, clothing, prescription and housing assistance), individual and family counseling, justice and peace/parish social ministry and we served Chemung, Schuyler, Tioga, Tompkins, Steuben Counties. Today our services in Chemung and Schuyler Counties include emergency assistance, justice and peace/parish social ministry, First-Time Homebuyer program, homeless shelter, residential and support services to individuals/families with mental illness diagnosis, domestic violence services, youth services, prisoner re-entry program and more.
Chemung County Ladies of Charity were established in 1940 and members are from all the Catholic parishes in the county. They express care for Chemung County neighbors-in-need through a variety of service projects during the year including:
· preparation of meals at Elmira Community Kitchen
· food collections for food pantries
· Christmas and Easter baskets
· Monthly birthday party with residents of St. Joseph’s skilled nursing unit
Monthly meetings provide opportunity for members to socialize, pray together, deepen awareness of our faith, consider the needs of brothers and sisters in the local community, and plan responses.
